Day 1 Venice
Arrival Day. No group activities today. In the evening there will be a welcome meeting before heading out for dinner (not included)
Day 2 Venice
We have a full day in Venice. This intriguing and romantic city evokes the ambience of a time gone by with its gondalas, bridges, the bustling San Marco Piazza and the classic Rialto bridge. All these sights seen a thousand times in images, are truly magical in person. We wander the narrow streets and laneways, across the picturesque bridges and through the spacious piazzas visiting the Doges Palace and Bridge of Sighs. You also have the option to visit the wonderful shops, museums, churches and galleries.
Days 3-5 Stresa
We take a morning train to Stresa, a beautiful town situated on the picturesque Lago Maggiore in the Italian Lakes. 19th century Stresa is both a lakeside town and a ski resort. We spend a day on the Lake visiting the Borromean islands and the wonderfully kitsch and quirky Palace on Isola Bella, once the residence of Charles III with its truly splendid gardens and views worthy of being part of a Star Wars movie. Charles Dickens wrote, after visiting in 1844, “For however fanciful and fantastic the Isola Bella may be, and is, it still is beautiful. Day 5 is free to take the cable car ride up to the top of Mount Mottarone, for walks and awesome views of the Lakes and Alps.
Day 6 Milan
A short train journey brings us to Milan, the undisputed fashion capital of Italy. With its fashion houses, cathedral (the Milan Duomo), traditional shopping malls and fabulous cafes and restaurants, Milan is a stylish and fabulous way to spend a day.
Days 7-8 Monterosso
We have an early morning visit to see the Last Supper – Leonardo Di Vinci’s masterpiece fresco which adorns the wall of the Church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie before our journey to the Cinque Terre in Liguria.Famous for Pesto, the Cinque Terre, or 5 lands, is a stunning series of villages hugging the cliffs overlooking the ocean on the west coast of Italy. Staying at the northernmost village of Monterosso, we take a train to the first village, Riomaggiore where you can walk the ‘Via Dell’Amore’ or ’Lovers Walk’ to Manarola, and onwards through Corniglia and Vernazza if you wish all the way back to Monterosso. Perhaps you’d prefer to take the local train from one village to the next, or even get around by boat. Each town is blessed with a unique ambience with hilltop views or quaint beaches and all have a plethora of fabulous cafes and bars to while away the day watching the world pass by over a glass or 3 of vino.
Days 9-11 Lucca
We have 4 fabulous nights in Lucca, one of the three power cities of Tuscany, along with Florence and Pisa. Now a walled town with a unique history and charm, we stay in Apartments in Lucca, allowing us to have a real taste of how life is lived by the Tuscan locals. While we’re in Lucca we visit a hillside winery for lunch, take a cooking class, hire bicycles to explore the town and it’s ancient walls and maybe even catch a Puccini opera.
Day 12 Lucca
Travelling up into the hills of Tuscany we spend a day in the historic village of Barga with quaint churches, piazzas, restaurants and great views.
Days 13-14 Florence
Returning to Lucca and travelling the short journey to Florence by local train, we transfer to our hotel before spending the next couple of days visiting this stunning city of museums, galleries and history. The home of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo, and the Renaissance, with its fabulous situation on the Arno river, Florence will be one of the many highlights of your trip.
Days 15-16 Assisi
Famous for being the home of St Francis, Assisi in the Umbria region of Italy is a major pilgrimage site. Hit by two devastating earthquakes in September 1997. But the recovery and restoration have been remarkable, although much remains to be done. Massive damage was caused to many historical sites, but the major attraction, the Basilica di San Francesco, reopened less than 2 years later.
Days 17-19 Rome
We journey south to Rome. One of the great cities of the world, Rome’s history spans over 2500 years. From the founding of Rome by the twins Romulus and Remus, to the ruins of the great Roman Empire at the Roman Forum, to the underground Catacombs, the Churches, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, and of course Vatican City, Rome is simply an incredible city which will amaze and astound you. Spend time watching the crowds at the Trevi fountain or sitting on the Spanish steps to get a feel for the touristy Rome, or spend time wandering the markets at Campo dei Fiori or Trastevere for the local Rome.
Group members not continuing on to the Amalfi Coast will be having their final night with us tonight.
6 Day Amalfi Coast Add-on
Days 20-23 Sorrento
Heading further south to the Amalfi Coast, we base ourselves for the next 4 nights at Sorrento. We take day trips to visit Pompeii, Positano and the Isle of Capri. The Amalfi Coast is one of the playgrounds of Europe’s holiday makers and has a class and charm that you will fall in love with.
