Diwali and Dev Diwali – the festivals of light

Experience the biggest festival in India with us

Diwali Udaipur

Diwali is a Hindu festival celebrated each year in October/November. Signifying the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. Throughout India and the Hindu world, this 5 day festival, culminating in the main night (the no-moon night) sees millions of lights – candles, string lights and of course fireworks – lit, pujas (prayer ceremonies) to Lakshmi (the goddess of fertility and prosperity) held and the exchange of gifts between family and friends. Diwali is basically the biggest festival of the Hindu calendar and is a little like Christmas and New Years Eve rolled into one.

Two weeks later, on the night of the full moon, along the banks of the sacred Ganges in Varanasi is held another very special celebration, called Dev Diwali. Thousands of diyas (small earthernware oil lamps) are lit along the steps of the river at dusk, accompanied by the rising full moon and fireworks to welcome the gods and goddesses to Varanasi.
